The milestones of Social Thingum – 2020

This year has been full of challenges and satisfactions that have contributed to the growth of Social Thingum.
We wanted to summarize these months through the most important events in which we have been protagonists.

 

January

We were sponsors of the Third Technical Workshop “AI and Platform: Machine learning-is-a-service”, held at the Artificial Intelligence Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano.

 

February

Social Thingum participated in the conference “Artificial Intelligence: Learn To Fly!“, organized by Osservatori Digital Innovation of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano.

Our CEO Francesco Epifania was a guest on Radio News 24 to present our projects WhoTeach and Easy4.0.

 

March

Social Thingum obtained the CTT certification as a Technology Transfer Center of the Industry 4.0 Plan. A prestigious opportunity granted to only 28 centers in Italy!

Our paper “Attentional Neural Mechanisms for Social Recommendations in Educational Platforms” was accepted at the “International Conference on Computer Supported Education” (CSEDU2020).

 

April

WhoTeach Live was launched: the virtual classroom that allows real-time training through a synchronous and interactive learning experience.

 

May

The trial of WhoTeach officially began within the knowledge management course taught by Professor Sara Manzoni at the University of Milano-Bicocca. On this occasion, students of Theory and Communication Technology (TTC) had the opportunity to explore the numerous functionalities and the multiple synergies achievable through the use of the platform.

 

July

In addition to the recognitions already received, we were also recognized by altantei40.it as a certified research center.

Our PhD candidate, Dr. Ricardo Matamoros, earned his Master’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca. His thesis, titled “Attentional Neural Mechanism for Recommendation Systems”, analyzes the research and developments carried out on neural network-based collaborative filtering recommendation systems, applied to WhoTeach.

Assintel Award (Italian National ICT Enterprises Association) was granted to us as Member of the Month for standing out thanks to the development project of the WhoTeach platform.

 

August

The academic article “Attentional Neural Mechanisms for Social Recommendations in Educational Platforms” was published on www.researchgate.net. The article was written in collaboration with several professors from the University of Milano-Bicocca by Francesco Epifania and the PhD researcher students of artificial intelligence at Social Thingum. In this article, the use of social information by the WhoTeach platform for educational services is analyzed, particularly its attention-based recommendation system designed for planning programs and courses for new teachers.

 

September

Social Thingum, invited by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), participated in the AI Summit 2020, one of the largest international events dedicated to Artificial Intelligence.

We also took part in the second edition of the Global Startup Program organized by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

 

October

We participated in the tenth stage of the B Heroes roadshow dedicated to startups in the empowerment category!

 

November

WhoTeach competed among the semifinalists in the CALL4IDEAS competition organized by BNP Paribas Cardif to propose innovative ideas in the insurance world.

Social Thingum is among the 100 top SME innovators in artificial intelligence. A great milestone achieved after participating in the AI Focus Group launched by the European DIGITAL SME Alliance together with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.

 

December

We participated in the Web Summit 2020, three intense days full of events to which we dedicated an article on our blog!

Among the many candidate companies, Social Thingum was the winner of the Facebook grants that will allow us to grow by implementing effective digital activities.
